Whorled (Here After Here After Here)
February 16, 2023 - April 22, 2023
Event Navigation
Whorled (Here After Here After Here), an installation by Mumbai-based artist, Jitish Kallat, will be on display at Somerset House from 16 February to 23 April, 2023.
The installation cocsists of two 336-metre-long intersecting spirals that echo the road signs of the United Kingdom. It links Somerset House’s neoclassical courtyard to places all over the world and the universe. The courtyard is transformed into a cosmic whorl, which spirals outward from its centre.
Like a lot of Kallat’s art, this one incorporates sacred geometry and alchemical designs while weaving together the immediate and the cosmic, the past and present.
A continuity of text and symbols that reflects the visual character of UK road signs is formed by two enormous, extended scrolls that connect to form spirals. These markers point to celestial objects like the Moon and Mars and far-off stars in the Milky Wayi illustrating the distance from Somerset House to places on the globe and beyond.
