Tracey Emin / Edvard Munch: The Loneliness of the Soul
May 18, 2021 - August 1, 2021
Event Navigation
“I’ve been in love with this man since I was eighteen,” says Tracey Emin of Norwegian expressionist, Edvard Munch. In The Loneliness of the Soul at the Royal Academy of Arts, Emin has selected artwork by Munch juxtaposed to her most recent paintings.
This is not the frist time that the artist’s fascination with the pioneer of Expressionism and painter of The Screen, has inspired her creative juices. In 1998, Emin created a video piece that was filmed at the same jetty in Oslo where the created much of her work.
The Loneliness of the Soul includes 25 of Emin’s work, that include some paintings showed for the first time, sculptures and neons. These are displayed alongside 18 oil and watercolour paintings by Munch from his collection in Oslo.
It represents an opportunity for us to understand how Munch has been a constant inspiration in Emin’s work, over more than 25 years, especially in his portrayal of women. It also showcases the breadth of skill that Emin possesses as an artist, and presents us with a possibility to view the work of Munch in a different light, through the lens of Tracey Emin.
The exhibition has been organised by MUNCH, Oslo, in partnership with the R&A.
