Angela Heisch: Low Speed Highs

Low Speed Highs, the second solo show in London by Angela Heisch, is being presented by Pippy Houldsworth Gallery in March and April.

This fresh body of art is Heisch’s most expansive yet, fusing the extravagant beauty and intricate design of Baroque with the unconscious mind, as advocated by the Surrealists.

These new pieces focus on movement, and Heisch’s distinctive organic forms are launched over the canvas in an expanding geometry that creates energetic waves. The artist’s interconnecting compositions have a feeling of motion and activity even though they are meticulously detailed.

Whether it be land, sky, sea, or deep space, each picture depicts a landscape. However, when stripped of any external connections, they become basically representations of the elemental, both familiar and molecular, but ultimately incomprehensible.

The observer is anchored and given a constant point of entry into the body of work by the abstract forms.

Its physicality and capacity to embody weight are emphasised by Heisch’s brilliant use of colour. Each intricate artwork focuses materials with opposing qualities, from delicate outlines and smooth gradients to bright expanses of opaque colour.

The core of the artist’s practise is this kind of lighthearted paradox. Heisch explores unformed concepts in her pastel works on paper, allowing intuition to take precedence over planning and colour’s emotional qualities — which may be distracting — to cede to mystery. Heisch presents an open-ended condition of potential and asks the audience to engage with curiosity.

Angela Heisch was born in Auckland in 1989. The artist now lives and works in Brooklyn, New Yrk.
