A solo exhibition of art works by Wangari Mathenge will be on display at the Pippy Houldsworth Gallery from 7 October to 4 November.
A Day of Rest features both new paintings by the artist and an installation that occupies a whole room. The work was inspired by the dire situation of domestic workers in Kenya. The artist’s aim is to change the narrative about the two-million workforce in the country that has dominated media attention recently.
Wangari Mathenge
Mathenge has previously addressed issues of displacement and in her series Ascendants (2020-2021), which looked at the language that surrounds migration. Now, she shifts here perspective to domestic migration in Kenya. In A Day of Rest she looks at seven young women who have left their rural communities to look for work in an urban environment, posing them with objects that are important to them.
