Address:
183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE, UK, London, UK
Description:

The Wellcome Collection has long been a venue for the squeamish to avoid and the curious to cherish. A museum about health, this is a vital and intriguing place to visit, and manages to demystify scary diseases by presenting practical information in fascinating yet no-nonsense terms.

Among the more bizarre odds and ends are scary-looking forceps, false eyes and the world’s first dildo. The collection was founded by a Victorian collector, Sir Henry Wellcome, who loved medical treasures. He also collected Napoleon’s toothbrush and a used guillotine blade from the French Revolution, both of which are on show here.

One of the most enticing things about the Wellcome Collection is its temporary exhibitions, always beautifully researched and packed with academic knowledge distilled into easy-to-absorb facts. Past shows have included the illusion of magic, how we play, and the impact of living in cities. Having taken in a host of gruelling facts, enjoy a slice of cake or some soup at the onsite Peyton and Byrne cafe.
