THE WOMEN OF LLANRUMNEY

Stratford East and the Sherman Theatre have unveilled the full cast and creative team for The Women of Llanrumney, Azuka Oforka’s searing, award-winning historical drama. Following widespread acclaim and audience demand, the production is set to captivate audiences once more, gracing stages in Cardiff and London this spring.

Patricia Logue, Sherman Theatre’s Associate Artist, helms the production, bringing together a stellar cast: Matthew Gravelle (Broadchurch, Keeping Faith) takes on the roles of Simon Taylor, Tommy Flynn, and Mr. Ainsworth; Shvorne Marks (Small Axe) embodies Cerys; Suzanne Packer (Casualty, In My Skin) portrays Annie; and Nia Roberts (Under Milk Wood, Keeping Faith) appears as Elizabeth.

The creative vision behind the production is equally impressive, with Stella-Jane Odoemelam crafting evocative sets and costumes, Andy Pike designing lighting that promises to heighten the drama, Takisha Sargeant composing an original score, and Ian Barnard shaping an immersive soundscape.

The Women of Llanrumney Plot

Set in the turbulent world of 1765 Jamaica, Oforka’s play examines the lives of Annie and Cerys, two women enslaved by the Morgan family. As Elizabeth Morgan confronts the potential collapse of her plantation, the power dynamics within the Great House teeter on a knife’s edge. Against the backdrop of an impending rebellion, Annie must navigate the harrowing realities of survival and reckon with the trauma that shadows her existence.

Director Patricia Logue calls it a “thrilling production with outstanding performances and razor-sharp writing.” She adds: “It feels really important to share The Women of Llanrumney with Stratford East’s audiences. This powerful story needs to be heard.”

Oforka echoes the sentiment, celebrating its inclusion in Stratford East’s 140th-anniversary season: “I am incredibly excited and honoured… to share this impactful play with a wider audience.”
