The Royal Academy of Arts celebrates Angelica Kauffman in an exhibition in the Jillian and Arthur M. Sackler Wing this spring.
Angelica Kauffman
Kauffman (1741-1807) was a founding member of the RA, as well as one of the most popular artists of her time. This exhibition traces the Swiss artist’s career with more than 30 works of art by Kauffman, some seen for the first time in the UK.
Born in Chur, Kauffman was a child prodigy, trained both in art and music. She studied the Old Masters in Italy before moving to London in 1766.
She was one of only two women chosen as founding members of the RA in 1768, alongside Mary Moser.
The exhibition starts with a group of self-portraits, followed by a selection of her work produced in Rome and after moving to London. She saw herself primarily as a history painter often focusing on female protagonists, such as in Cleopatra Adorning the Tomb of Mark Anthony. Then the exhibition will turn to her work with the Royal Academy before concluding with her late career once she had left London to return to Rome.
She was described as “the most cultivated woman in Europe.”
